The Albula-Bernina rail line, our UNESCO heritage landscape

In 2008 UNESCO designated the Rhaetian Railway’s Albula-Bernina line as a World Heritage Landscape. With its spectacular railway architecture, deep gorges, icy glaciers and Mediterranean climate, the interaction between railway, landscape and the population presents a unique experience. The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) in the Albula-Bernina Landscape traverses what is perhaps the most beautiful of all the alpine crossings – an ideal way to experience the Alps.

As far as the eye can see

The UNESCO Heritage Landscape not only comprises the RhB railway line itself, but also the whole region that you can experience from the train window. In other words, it includes the natural and cultural landscape in which it nestles, the picturesque villages and settlements as well as local customs and traditions.

The highest rail transit in the Alps

The Bernina Line is unique in the world on two counts: no other alpine line crosses as high above sea level, and  it is also one of the world’s steepest adhesion railways. Crossing the Bernina Pass at 2253 meters (7392 ft.) and the Brusio Circular Viaduct represent the rail line’s greatest engineering challenges south of the Alps.

Travelling by train: an ideal mode of transportation

The Bernina Line is the Poschiavo Valley’s backbone, and the railway is the best way to vacation in the valley. Both relaxing and sustainable, the train is the easiest way to reach our beautiful spots: Cavaglia, Alp Grüm and the Ospizio Bernina; just perfect for fleeing daily stress and a carefree way to enjoy our breathtaking views.

The Via Albula/Bernina Trail

Would you prefer to hike the Albula-Bernina Line? The Via Albula/Bernina Trail follows the rail line in ten stages from Thusis to Tirano. The tired hiker can access the train anywhere along the line.

Access the Via Albula/Bernina information on the RhB website and at SwitzerlandMobility
